Human cognition and development are far more diverse and dynamic than we have traditionally understood. For centuries, societies have strived to define “normal” cognitive functioning while viewing deviations from that norm as deficits. However, with the advent of the neurodiversity movement and the growing understanding of epigenetics, we are gaining new insights into how the human brain develops, adapts, and varies across individuals.

The concept of neurodiversity has revolutionised how we view cognitive differences, emphasising that variations in brain function—whether seen in autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other conditions—are part of the natural spectrum of human diversity. But beyond genetics, epigenetics offers a crucial perspective: our environment plays a significant role in shaping how our genes are expressed, particularly in early childhood when the brain is highly plastic.

This essay will explore how epigenetics and neurodiversity intersect, the environmental factors that influence cognitive outcomes, and how society—knowingly or unknowingly—has shaped the traits it values over time. We’ll also discuss the limitations of current approaches to inclusivity, the importance of targeted support, and the need to ask profound questions about which traits we want to promote or prevent in future generations.

Understanding Neurodiversity as a Universal Concept

Sociologist Judy Singer coined the term neurodiversity in the late 1990s to shift society’s perception of neurological differences. Singer argued that cognitive variations, such as those seen in autism, ADHD, and dyslexia, should not be pathologised but instead accepted as part of the natural diversity of the human brain. Neurodiversity posits that just as biodiversity enriches ecosystems, neurodiversity enriches human society, contributing a range of perspectives, abilities, and ways of thinking.
