Who would have thought it?
Our internal bodily state, called ‘interostate,’ Influences Which thoughts are generated Which are selected (TGTS).
During development and critical learning periods, This state can be recorded in our tissues Through epigenetic tags, Shaping how flexibly we think in the future.
What actually chooses a thought?
I use a simple model: TGTS (Thought Generator/Thought Selector).
The Generator is prolific and reactive: Sensations, Memories, Predictions.
The Selector is discerning: It accepts, Edits, or Rejects In real time.
On good days, the Selector feels like agency.
On bad days, the Generator floods the zone, The Selector can’t keep up.
Here’s the seldom voiced truth:The Selector’s power isn’t set in stone.
It flows with the body’s whispers Breathing, sleep, inflammation, hormones, The dance of the autonomic nervous system.
When safety and balance soothe the soul, we stand at the crossroads with open hands.
But when chaos reigns, our choices shrink A delicate dance of space and silence.
We don’t lose neurons;
We lose the horizon to dream and decide.
What’s the “interostate,” and why does it rule the room?
If “interoception” is awareness of the body, The interostate is the underlying condition of the body itself.
It’s internal weather.
Is the system tilted toward vigilance or openness?
Are we inflamed or calm?
Is fuel abundant or scarce?
You don’t have to feel these variables consciously for them to govern cognition.
They simply set the bias.
This is autonomic flexibility, The ease with which we can shift between being mobilised and calm.
When this flexibility is high, It expands our ability to choose and time our actions more precisely, Allowing for better control.
Conversely, low flexibility narrows our options,…
